One popup works for all the languages of your store. You do not make a copy of the popup for each language.

How translation works

A visitor sees the popup in the language of the storefront page. Shopify sets this language from the languages and the markets of your store. The language of the browser has no effect.
  • The source language is the language that you wrote the popup in. TextYess detects it from your text. Visitors in the source language see your text as you wrote it. If TextYess detects the wrong language, set it in Languages → Written in.
  • For all other languages, TextYess translates the headings, the body text, the field labels, the placeholders, the buttons, the success screen, and the teaser.
  • Discount codes, links, and phone numbers do not change.
  • A language shows only when all of its texts are ready. Until then, visitors see all of the popup in the source language. The one exception is the consent notice: it stays in the source language until you write it (see below).
  • The first visitor in a new language can see the source language. The translation is then ready for the next visitors.
If your store shows only one language and you wrote the popup in it, TextYess translates nothing. If you wrote the popup in another language, all visitors see it translated into the language of your store. TextYess translates popups into 34 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
TextYess translates each popup automatically into a maximum of 12 languages. When a popup has 12 automatic languages, a visitor in a new language sees the source language. You can still add that language in the Languages tab.

See the status of each language

Open the Growth tool kit section of the menu. Go to Popups and open the popup. Then open the Languages tab. The tab shows one row for each language. The status of a row tells you what visitors in that language see: The button on each row does the next step for that language.

Translate a language now

TextYess translates a language when the first visitor in that language arrives. To translate it before that, click Translate now on its row. TextYess translates the saved popup. If you changed a text of the popup, save the popup first. If the status is Could not translate, click Try again. To add a language that is not in the list, click Add language. Then select the language. TextYess translates it immediately.

Edit a translation

  1. On the row of the language, click Edit texts. A panel shows each text of the popup next to its original. If the row shows Write notice or Review, click that button. Then click Edit all texts.
  2. To use your own words, edit the text. Your text replaces the automatic translation for that text only.
  3. Click Done.
  4. Save the popup.
If you change a text in the source language, TextYess translates the new text again. If you wrote your own version of that text, the language shows Needs review. Visitors see the automatic translation until you do one of these steps:
  • Click Review on the row. Then click Keep mine to keep your version, or Use automatic to use the new automatic translation.
  • Change your version in Edit texts.

Turn off a language

  1. Find the Turn off button of the language. A row that is Not translated yet shows it. For the other languages, it is in the panel that opens with Edit texts, Write notice, or Review.
  2. Click Turn off.
  3. Save the popup.
Visitors in that language then see the popup in the source language. TextYess does not translate the popup into that language again. To turn the language on again, click Turn on on its row. To show the popup to fewer visitors instead, use Behavior → Who sees it. See Choose who sees the popup. TextYess never translates the consent notice of the email and WhatsApp fields automatically. The notice is legal text, and your consent records keep the words that the visitor saw. Until you write the notice for a language, the language shows Needs consent notice. Visitors in that language see the notice in the source language. The rest of the popup shows in their language. To write the notice:
  1. On the row of the language, click Write notice.
  2. Write the notice in that language.
  3. Click Done.
  4. Save the popup.
When a visitor subscribes, the consent record keeps the notice in the language that the visitor saw. If you change the notice in the source language, your translations of it stop showing. Visitors see the new notice in the source language until you update each language.

Choose who sees the popup

Open Behavior → Who sees it. You can add two conditions:
  • Country is the country that the visitor is in. Shopify detects it from the location of the visitor. The country selector of your store has no effect.
  • Language is the language of the storefront page.
For each condition, select a mode and one or more countries or languages:
  • Only visitors in these countries (or browsing in these languages) shows the popup to visitors on the list.
  • Everyone except visitors in these countries (or browsing in these languages) shows the popup to all other visitors.
A condition with an empty list has no effect. If you set the two conditions, a visitor must match both to see the popup. To show a different offer in each market, make a second popup. Show the first popup only to some countries or languages, and the second popup to everyone except them.
If TextYess cannot read the country of a visitor, a popup with a country condition does not show to that visitor. The language condition works the same way. The country comes from Shopify, so on a store that is not on Shopify a popup with a country condition never shows.

Double opt-in

If double opt-in is on, the confirmation page opens in the language of the popup that the visitor saw. The confirmation email does not change. It is the email that you set up in Lists & sync.
